The ultimate goal of innovation is to transform creative ideas into sustainably profitable business models.

The challenge most companies face is that they have to create great new products while running their core business. In addition to this, they use the same tools that they use to run their core business to manage innovation (e.g. business plans and annual budgeting).

These tools may work well for managing core products with known business models, customers and revenues. However, such tools focus more on execution and, therefore, do not work well for managing innovators while they search for the right business model.

If you are working in, or leading, an innovation team, innovation is not just a creative process. It is most and foremost a management challenge.

You’ll likely have questions like

  • If I can’t use a business plan, how do I make decisions on innovation projects?
  • Without using financial numbers, how do I know whether our team is making progress?
  • During an innovation project, what questions do we need to ask ourselves, and when?

This Masterclass will help you make investment decisions, track innovation progress, and find the right tools for innovation accounting.

What You'll Learn

The key question we’ll be addressing during this 1-day Masterclass is how you can manage and lead innovation effectively.

It’s going to be a highly interactive session, packed with activities and case studies. Be prepared for a fun day of laughter and fast paced learning.

The workshop covers the following topics, ranging from how innovation teams work to how executives can work with their teams to develop a robust innovation strategy:

  • Lean Innovation – This is a brief introduction to the lean innovation process. How do innovators design business models, identify and test assumptions? How do they pivot and iterate their way to success?
  • Innovation Strategy – Innovation strategy is both deliberate and emergent. How do we develop our innovation thesis? What are the key trends in our industry? How do we use innovation to respond to these trends? How do we work to ensure that our company has a balanced portfolio of products and services?
  • The Innovation Framework – In order to manage innovation, we need to understand the innovation lifecycle. What are the key ingredients for creating ideas, testing ideas and scaling ideas? What is problem-solution fit?
  • Investment Decisions – Using the innovation lifecycle, how do we make investment decisions in new products and services? How do we track progress and measure success? What are the right questions for each stage of the innovation journey?
  • Start Tomorrow – The world is changing fast and you can’t afford to wait. What key steps can you start taking when you get back to work?

As a result of participating, you will know how to:

  1. Benchmark any innovation project to find out how much a team has accomplished
  2. Make investment decisions based on the right innovation criteria
  3. Lead innovation teams by asking the right questions at the right time
  4. Track innovation progress and help your teams make decisions about what to do next
  5. Use the lean innovation toolbox for innovation accounting
