Inner Workings of Innovation: How to Create a Personal Flywheel for the Enterprise

Mohan Nair

Senior VP & Chief Innovation Officer at Cambia Health Solutions

Pre-Covid19 everything seemed to be about show rather than know, and now we see the unknown has transcended and settled. We learned that short-term adaptation is possible, but long-term adaption requires us understanding ourselves on a deeper level.

We are now at a defining peak. The false narratives found in corporate innovation theater have faltered. We must face our fallacies and fears and define who we are and what we want to be to serve the greater good.

This discussion focuses on five inherent pathways to understanding the mind of the innovator. Using real life stories of successes and faults, this talk will bring to light how you can transform an organization from within.

Lead From the Future: How to Use Future-back Thinking to Lead and Innovate in Times of Crisis

Mark W. Johnson

Co-Founder and Senior Partner at ‎Innosight

As the Covid-19 pandemic shakes the global economy and disrupts the way we live, work, and conduct business, leaders are scrambling to manage the immediate fallout. But, visionary leaders like Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela didn’t simply react to the most imminent threats confronting them; they were guided by their vision for a better future, after those challenges had been overcome.
What will the business environment look like one to two years from now, when the pandemic comes to an end? It will likely be very different from what it was before the crisis began. What can you do to prepare for it today?

In this talk, i will show you how to:

• Navigate and lead with purpose through the COVID-19 disruption
• Toggle between present-forward and future-back thinking
• Create an inspiring vision for your organization and translate it into an actionable strategy
• Learn from Apple, Johnson & Johnson, and other companies that have successfully innovated during downturns

As the crisis has brought home, the great challenge confronting leaders is knowing how to manage the urgent business of today while setting a path towards a better future. Leaders and companies that know how to develop a vision and turn it into a long-term strategy will emerge both stronger and more resilient than they were before.

'Breaking The Silos' Of Innovation Methods

Shreyas Bakshi

Vice President & Head of Innovation - Automotive Sector at Mahindra Group

After having dealt with silos amongst people, we have found ways of creating silos amongst innovation methods. Each method claims to be ‘the master’ method for innovation and each new one claims to be superior to the previous ones.

There are multiple methods for innovation available across the world and then there are many ‘derived’ versions of some of these methods. This has been found to often put average innovators in a dilemma of what, when & how to use.

As a result, they often end up using each one separately and thereby limiting their abilities to come up with more innovations consistently. On the other hand, top innovators, do it all intuitively without really worrying about the method from which they have achieved it.

In the context where innovation needs to be institutionalised, the need of a common language is essential. With this intent, the Innovation Team at Automotive & Farm sector of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, embarked on a journey to harmonise all the methods that were found to be successfully deployed in the organisation while keep it open to include newer methods as and when these were found to be relevant.

Shreyas, who heads this Innovation Team, has worked with many methods in different roles of innovation, and realised that many methods say the same thing in different words and have something unique to offer across different stages of an innovation project.

In this session, Shreyas will attempt to share his learnings on how the interplay between various innovation methods can be leveraged across the journey of an innovation project. For confidentiality purpose, only sanitized data on outcomes will be shared.

The answer is yes.

When we say we’re time poor, what we really mean is we’re decision poor.

Learn how to get twice as much done in half the time, by focusing on high value tasks, getting on top of evolutionary programming forcing us to take the path of least effort, and leveraging tools to do away with rudimentary work.

Presented by Steve Glaveski, who practices what he preaches, founding Collective Campus and Lemonade Stand, writing five books, recording 380 podcast episodes, and a boutique investment fund, all in the past five years while working, on average, six hours a day.

bp Launchpad: Why and How a Fortune 10 Built a "Scaling-Up Factory"

David Gilmour & Frank Mattes

Global Head of bp Ventures and Launchpad | Founder and CEO at innovation-3. Author of Scaling Up Corporate Startups

Like so many other companies, bp was not satisfied with the “Return On Innovation” it got from commercialization of proprietary technology, its Corporate Venture Capital activities and all the other tools in the corporate innovation toolkit. Its corporate startups and ventures did not achieve business impact. Many of them died after MVP stage.

Together with other leading companies and innovation-3, bp worked out the root causes for this “Scaling-up problem” and a framework to solve it – The Lean Scaleup.

David Gilmour (at that time SVP at bp Group Tech, responsible for tech commercialization and bp Ventures) and Frank Mattes put the Lean Scaleup to work in the corporate context of bp.

Due to the size of its business and its ambition, bp made the decision to install a “Scaling-Up Factory” between the day-to-day-business and the innovation units. bp Launchpad was set up to leverage corporate assets while at the same time leaving the scaleups in speedboat mode.

In this session, David and Frank reflect on their journey and how corporates can change their approach to building business from innovation.
