Intrapreneurship: 10 Lessons From The Trenches

More and more big and established companies are adopting Intrapreneurship as their approach to innovation.

It has certainly proven to help you become faster and minimize the resources devoted to your internal ventures, by investing incrementally as the ventures progress with validated learnings and as uncertainty decreases. Hence it enables companies to minimize the risk of their innovation bets. Intrapreneurship also allows you to leverage the talent in your company.

But it is not simple to put in place an intrapreneurship program that brings the expected results. In 2012 Telefónica redefined their innovation model, making the Lean Startup methodology the core of their way of working, turning their innovation projects into internal ventures.

At the same time, they made another big change, they started launching Innovation Calls where their employees could submit their ideas and, if selected, they get to work full time on their proposals and become intrapreneurs. This is how Telefónica’s intrapreneurship program was born.

In the course of these years Telefónica has faced and overcome several challenges. In this session Susana will go through the main 10 lessons she  learnt during this time: what works and what does not.

Susana Jurado

Head of Innovation Portfolio at Core Innovation, Telefónica

Susana Jurado is currently Head of Innovation Portfolio at Core Innovation, Telefónica. In the last seven years her career has focused on innovation and strategy. She has been also a member of the core team that defined the current innovation model at Telefónica R&D. In her current role she drives the innovation process, the key tool for managing innovation projects funnel; and runs the innovation calls, where employees submit their ideas (these calls are thus the main source of projects for the innovation funnel). She also fosters conceptualization of new ideas, and mentors and assesses innovation projects. She has co-authored the Lean Elephants white paper, describing the experience and learnings of applying Lean Startup to innovation projects at Telefónica since 2012. Susana holds a MS in Telecommunication Engineering and an Executive MBA from IE Business School.
