Power From Within – Innovation Through Crowdsourcing In The Food Industry

What does innovation management mean in the context of CPG and food services? What can we as a company learn from crowdsourcing innovation?

In spring 2018, we sent an open invite to all of Fazer’s 15,000 employees to join an Innovation Challenge. The objective was to find new growth ideas and pioneering intrapreneurs to drive those ideas forward. More than 100 people from different business areas and countries took the challenge and we provided them with coaching, tools, and two months to work on the ideas, using lean start- up and design thinking methods. To support the success of the best ideas, also after the Innovation Challenge, we set up a process to lead ideas all the way from the initial idea to their launch.

Eeva has worked at Fazer’s innovation and research unit Fazer Lab for over seven years. She specializes in new business development and open innovation.

During the first joint co-creation projects with start-ups she noticed that to excel in open innovation, the company culture must support co-creation, experimentation and iterative ways of working across multiple business areas. Fazer Innovation Challenge was developed out of the need to coach lean start-up and design thinking capabilities company-wide, and to spark an innovative and an entrepreneurial culture at Fazer.
