Omega8 by Walmart: How Walmart Works Directly With Startups in China

Walmart has operated in China since 1996 with a mix of Sam’s Clubs, Walmart hypermarket and supercenters, and depots. It has strategic relationships with, Dada, and Tencent. As Walmart China accelerated its growth in ecommerce over recent years, it also looked to solve specific pain points for customers and associates with leapfrog technologies. It developed an internal program called Omega 8 to work with accelerators and startups creating solutions specifically for its business operations in China. Ben Hassing, who recently spent his last four years with Walmart China and is relocating with Walmart to San Francisco will walk through the development of Omega 8 and give details on one of the successful proof of concepts that is now being scaled.

Ben Hassing is senior vice president of Global Cross Border Trade at Walmart. He is responsible for Walmart’s cross border business across the company’s e-commerce platforms. His team also supports the development of e-commerce supply chain capabilities across international markets. He and his teams are based in Sunnyvale and San Bruno, California.

In his 16 years with Walmart, Hassing has held leadership roles in strategic planning, finance, merchandising, store operations, technology and e-commerce. Prior to his current role, he was based for four years in Shanghai and Shnezhen, China where he led e-commerce and technology for Walmart and Sam’s Club.

Hassing holds an MBA from the Ross at the University of Michigan and a BA from Temple University.
