About the session

Ecosystems are typically assessed using two kinds of metrics: conventional financial metrics, such as revenue, cash burn rate, profitability; and vanity metrics, such as market size and ecosystem activity. The former are not very useful for assessing the prospects of an ecosystem, the latter can be misleading because they are not necessarily linked to value creation. This session lays out a set of metrics and red flags to determine whether your ecosystem is still on track for success in its different lifecycle phases. They will help you identify emerging issues and decide if you need to cut losses or reorient your ecosystem.

About the speaker

Ulrich Pidun is a partner and director in the Frankfurt office of Boston Consulting Group. He is an expert for corporate development and European topic leader for corporate strategy, with 24 years of experience in this field. As a fellow at the BCG Henderson Institute, Ulrich investigates business ecosystems with a focus on ecosystem design, governance, and strategies. In addition to his work at BCG, Ulrich Pidun serves as professor for corporate strategy at Technical University of Berlin, Germany.

About the session

Historically, companies want to own. And so build and buy decisions dominate. Making partnering decisions with – and especially start-ups is less well understood. How do companies approach the Build vs. Buy vs. Partner trade-off? How to deal with political factors that influence the decision-making process? Hear first-hand from Danilo Raponi (Group Head of Innovation, Generali) and Susana Jurado (Head of Telefónica Open Innovation Campus at Telefonica) as they share personal experiences, and bring your own approach and open questions as well.

About the speaker

Danilo is the Group Head of Innovation at Generali, where he is responsible for driving and scaling innovation throughout the Group, as well as leading the investment and management of Generali’s Innovation Fund. Danilo joined Generali from Munich Re, where he held a number of innovation-related roles, including the Lead of Munich Re’s Global Innovation Framework project. Danilo was also a co-founder of one of Munich Re’s largest innovation initiatives: SaveUp/garden, a behaviour-based personal finance app that aimed to redefine insurance companies’ offering of investment and savings products to young customers. As Senior Manager at Capital Partners, he formulated a comprehensive response to Covid19 challenges. Danilo has extensive experience in both Life and Non-Life (Re)Insurance, having held a number of roles in Swiss Re, Hannover Re, and Ernst & Young over more than 12 years, in addition to advisory roles in several Fintech start-ups. He has taught at the University of Zurich and at the University of Frankfurt, and has also worked as a consultant in the innovation/Insurtech space as well as having entrepreneurial experience. Danilo holds a MSc summa cum laude from Luiss University in Rome, a PhD from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the Bocconi School of Management. Exploring emerging, integrated approaches to corporate open innovation. We will explore how corporate innovation programs can spot emerging trends & threats, exploit emerging technologies, identify new partner, build, invest and acquisition opportunities – all in the service of accelerating innovation outcomes, building competitive advantage and driving growth. We will focus on how benchmark corporate open innovation programs are breaking down internal silos, leveraging the broader ecosystem to gather “outside-in” perspectives on disruption and are providing a common framework, tools and methodologies to unlock integrated build/buy/partner/invest decisions.

About the session

Finding the startups your Innovation Team is looking for is as simple as finding a needle in a haystack… When the haystack’s on a boat in the middle of a hurricane. And your role often comes with little (Read: NO) internal support. Addressing these challenges isn’t easy but using a more collaborative approach to internally promote your innovation efforts often delivers greater results than going it alone. At GAN, we take the most time-intensive elements of the innovation search process off your plate so you’re set up for success faster. We also incorporate best practices from the 100s of Innovation Teams we’ve supported into our recommendations so you don’t just find startups, you find ready-to-pilot startups and enter them into ready-to-pilot processes.

About the speaker

With over 20 years of experience spanning small business consulting, corporate executive + startup sales as well as nonprofit training, Jonathan brings a wealth of knowledge to his speaking role, highlighting first-hand experience from a diverse pool of interpersonal communication strategies. Have some time? Ask him about being an Air Force brat, performing on Broadway, playing professional football or his thesis “Bottle It: Depression in the Law Enforcement Community.” Jonathan and his wife, Stacy, are avid travelers and delight in sharing experiences with their daughter, Aliyah.

About the session

Corporations increasingly want to work with startups and entrepreneurs as they recognise half their revenues within five years will have to come from new sources. Building new business lines is one way and corporate venturing helps them get there. Annual data from GCV Analytics will show where corporate venture capitalists are active and discussion will identify the best ways to tap them.

About the speaker

James was editor of Private Equity News, part of Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal in London, for nearly four years until May, 2010 when he launched Global Corporate Venturing as an independent title from publishing company Mawsonia. This was followed by the launch of the second publication, Global University Venturing, in January 2012 to help students and faculty and academia more broadly launch or develop their entrepreneurial businesses and work with external peers. As well as editing Private Equity News, James coordinated leveraged buyout and venture capital coverage for use by other titles in the Dow Jones and News Corporation group, acted as a spokesman on BBC radio and television and chaired awards and conferences for a host of media groups, including the BVCA awards and event for more than 1,000 people in October, 2009. Previously, James had freelanced for a host of national and trade media titles, including the BBC, Financial Times, Economist, Independent on Sunday, Sunday Express and Dow Jones Newswires; provided research for Nick Davies’s book, Flat Earth News; was a foreign correspondent in central and eastern Europe; and was international editor for FT Business. After graduating from King’s College, London, James’s first job was working at technology publishing house ComputerWire.
