The Venture Client Model A Breakthrough Vehicle for Corporations to Benefit Strategically From Top Startups

Innov8rs Learning Lab on Startup Collaboration & Ecosystem Engagement (14-16 March 2023)

About the session

Session participants will gain insights about the Venture Client model of corporate venturing, and about corporate Venture Client Units.

The Venture Client Unit is a new and practical vehicle for corporations to harness the strategic benefits from high-quality startups that revolutionizes corporate innovation. By acting as an early-adopter venture client of startups, corporations are able to leverage the strengths of startups to address some of their most pressing unsolved innovation needs.

The Venture Client Unit is a departure from traditional corporate venturing models, such as corporate venture capital and accelerators. These position the corporation as an investor, rather than a user-client of startup innovations. These are, hence biased towards helping the startup (for the sake of gaining a financial benefit from startup equity), instead of seeking help from startups in pursuit of solving a critical challenge that will generate strategic benefits worth millions in revenue and profitability gains.

About the speaker

Gregor founded 27pilots to help companies build, improve and scale their internal Venture Client Units and organizational capabilities. Venture Client Units are a breakthrough venturing vehicle that enables companies of any industry to benefit strategically from top startups faster, in higher numbers and at significantly lower cost and risk than ever before possible.

Before 27pilots, Gregor spent six years at BMW, where he invented and developed the Venture Client model to solve a critical challenge: How can the entire organization benefit from many top startups faster, and at lower cost and risk than possible through traditional corporate venturing? At BMW he founded and managing the BMW Startup Garage, the world’s first Venture Client unit, for three years.

About the session

Innovation is one of the top strategic priorities for many global organizations and executives: 84% of executives believe innovation is important for growth [1]. To continue growing in a rapidly changing market, many organizations have relied on methodologies proven successful in the world of design and technology, such as Design Thinking and Agile. Although these methodologies come predefined with some clear principles to follow, they also come with mindsets – a prerequisite and key ingredient for successful outcomes.

Using her experience in Open Innovation over the past 2 years in a global mining company, Suzanne will share some lessons learned in this session, exploring the variances and drawing parallels between theory and practice in applying such methodologies.

About the speaker

Suzanne’s mission is to help people and organizations transform and reinvent themselves by harnessing their unique gift of creativity to generate value. She draws from her diverse experiences in engineering, management consulting, technology implementation, digital transformation, corporate innovation, as well as leading corporate diversity initiatives.

At Vale, Suzanne leads entrepreneurial projects using open innovation with the goal of helping her company tackle some of its most complex problems, requiring reimagining rather than incremental innovation; while also accelerating innovation for the mining industry as a whole. With her corporate innovation experiences across industries, she understands that a company’s culture plays a fundamental role in the adoption and dissemination of innovation. The nuance and complexities of the mining industry, and the industrial nature of the work make innovation a particularly challenging exercise – but also a very rewarding one!

About the session

Today we make media differently in the metaverse and with the help of AI. We distribute media differently via an overload of (streaming) platforms and podcasts. We consume media differently on demand and on the road. Great content is just not good anymore to win.
As the public broadcaster for Flemish television and Radio, the VRT needs to follow the increasing innovation pace in the changing media market. Therefore, VRT launched 7 years ago ‘VRT Sandbox’ = the front door (literally) for startups to enter the VRT. The incubation and acceleration model became a blue-print for other media organizations and other industries (Flemish Government, B-Post…)

How do you create your own startup-driven experimentation sandbox?
What did we learn from 7 years Sandbox, both on entrepreneurship and interapreneurship?
To focus on startups or scaleups? Or both?

About the speaker

As ScaleUp Coordinator at VRT Sandbox, Mathias bridges the gap between scaleup founders and corporate leads within VRT or in the VRT media ecosystem. He actively scouts the startup scene to find new technological and creative opportunities that fulfill the needs of the media creator or consumer.
Once a startup has entered the VRT corporate walls, Mathias coordinates the process from beginning to end. After a successful collaboration, he finds new ways to share the startup-inspired innovation story with the outside world to keep the ‘VRT Sandbox heartbeat’ pumping.

With previous startup experiences at What’s In the Box?, Cloud, and FLAVR, Mathias is also not shy about an entrepreneurial adventure.

About the session

New innovation ecosystems are emerging globally, beyond well-known hubs. While often smaller or more specialized than, say, Silicon Valley, these clusters of activity are expanding the regional opportunities for corporate engagement in new locations. Meanwhile, digital interactions enable wider participation across geographic boundaries.

To achieve their goals for innovation, companies need to take a systematic approach to identifying and securing competitive advantage from working with these innovation communities. Join this AMA with Dr. Phil Budden, Senior Lecturer at MIT, to understand the latest re innovation ecosystems (and if/how the ecosystem play is changing because of recent global developments).

About the speaker

Dr.Phil is a Senior Lecturer at MIT’s Management School, where he researches and teaches internationally about innovation, where it happens (in ecosystems, and why), and why ‘corporate innovation’ is so important but also so hard. Having worked as a diplomat and corporate banker before joining MIT, Dr.Phil brings a real-world approach to his teaching, enabling his corporate clients to harness innovation, both internally and by engaging other stakeholders in ecosystems, especially startups and entrepreneurs.

About the session

Engaging the external startup ecosystem can be very rewarding – if every feature of your program is designed to consistently work towards your objectives. In this AMA session, Paolo Lombardi and Adam Berk, the authors of Startup Program Design (McGraw-Hill, 2022), will map the design steps behind the most successful corporate and government programs. Session participants will learn how to choose a program model (accelerator, incubator, etc.), tweak it to their goals, and identify the right startups to achieve their KPIs.

About the speaker

Paolo Lombardi wrote his first line of code at the age of 7 and trained his first neural network in 1995. He co-founded two startups and the startup accelerator Techpeaks. He was later involved in two dozen startup programs for corporations and public institutions, including the World Bank, European Commission, and Italy’s main telco operator TIM. He is currently Director of AI Innovation at Taylor & Francis and contract lecturer of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Bocconi Business School, Italy. Paolo is a Fulbright Fellow and holds a double PhD in Computer Vision from the University of Pavia and Paris Sud.

Adam Berk is a startup collaboration and innovation expert with over a decade of experience working with large organizations to drive innovation at scale. He is the co-author of “”Startup Program Design””, a book about how organizations can work with startups for better outcomes on both sides. With a proven track record of helping large public and private companies, government agencies, and impact-driven organizations implement “”innovation at scale”” using Lean Startup principles, hypothesis-driven product development, and evidence-based (stage-gate) investment governance. He also serves as a mentor for Google for Startups, Techstars, and college entrepreneurship programs.
