About the session
Some 80 percent of large companies base their pre-Scaling discovery and validation approach on the Lean Startup. However, the stats tell you that only 1 out of 8 corporate startups make it to scale and only 25% of the winners create annual revenues of more than USD 50M. So apparently, corporates need a more sophisticated validation framework. But what exactly is needed and how does such framework look like?
Steve Kopp from Amadeus’ business builder Nexwave and Frank Mattes, co-creator of the Lean Scaleup framework, will host this session and provide you with what you need to upgrade your company’s approach to validation in the corporate context and transitioning corporate startups to Scaling-Up. For the first time, the Lean Scaleup toolbox (SaaS solution of the pre-Scaling methodology) will be shown in public.
About the speaker
Frank Mattes is an expert in corporate business-building, advisor to Corporate Innovation and Corporate Venturing, and author of two books on corporate business building. In the last four years, Frank focused on the corporate business-building problem: why do large companies struggle dramatically in building new businesses from innovation – and how can they improve? Together with 20+ industry leaders from many sectors, Frank co-created the Lean Scaleup™ framework. This framework comprises Best Practices in how to create new sizable, profitable businesses The Lean Scaleup is the latest addition to the corporate entrepreneurship toolbox. It takes the Lean Startup into the corporate context, extends it to an end-to end journey from idea to scale and comprises the Best Practices from some of the world’s finest companies.
To help corporate innovation practitioners improve in business-building, Frank founded the consulting agency Lean Scaleup and published the book with the same name in May 2021. The book was co-written with two dozens of corporate practitioners and two leading business schools, UC Berkeley and the London Business School. Please find more on the book and the Lean Scaleup framework at www.leanscaleup.com/book Before Lean Scaleup, Frank founded innovation-3, a consulting agency specialized in non-incremental innovation), was with the Boston Consulting Group and Member of the Board of a B2B scaleup. Frank holds two M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and Ulm University (Germany).
Steve is a visionary, result-oriented senior leader with 25 years of experience in designing and building new digital solutions and businesses. About the session
Companies which are serious about their future have started to build new ventures. These new ventures are close enough to the core business to leverage corporate assets, yet far enough to not be absorbed by the machine designed to execute upon existing business models.
As part of Migros, Sparrow Ventures started in 2018 building ventures and invest in startups to allow for the conciliation of the two opposing activities: exploitation of the current and exploration of the new. This talk explains how this balance might be achieved and which pitfalls might occur along the way.
About the speaker
Timo is the Chief Venture Officer (CVO) at the Zurich-based venture builder and venture capitalist of Migros: Sparrow Ventures. At Sparrow, Timo is in charge of the team that drives the development of new business models forward to build and expand a portfolio of innovative and sustainable successful ventures such as WePractice, Yuno or Snäx. After a successful corporate career, Timo entered the world of entrepreneurship by co-founding wydr, the “Tinder for art” in 2015 and organizing events such as Startup Weekend or Lean Startup Meetup, helping entrepreneurs to validate their early-stage ideas.

About the session
Some four years ago, Amadeus – one of the top 10 software companies and a key IT provider for the global travel and tourism industry – set up Nexwave, a business Incubator. Nexwave should discover and create next-generation of growth businesses for its target industry and the ecosystem. Initial successes demonstrated that Nexwave’s approach was working.
However, Nexwave’s Incubation Office (NIO) – headed by Steve Kopp – found that there was room for improvement: A more systematic approach to business building, more entrepreneurship, more clarity on leaps-of-faith, more effective progress management and more corporate context were top-priority items. While doing research on Best Practices in business building, Steve came across Frank Mattes and the Lean Scaleup. In this talk, Steve and Frank outline the cornerstones of the Lean Scaleup and how NIO implemented this Best Practice framework.
