Strategic Innovation as a Profession: Roles, Responsibilities and Careers

Gina O'Connor,

Professor of Innovation Management at Babson College

as recorded on 7-8 January 2020 as part of Innov8rs Connect on Careers, Personal Development & Wellbeing

We find that corporate innovators who bring gamechangers to market are known throughout their companies as champions. Why? Because it’s only by fighting against the tide of corporate rules, processes and norms that they succeed. They’re typically protected by a senior sponsor in order to do their job. But not everyone’s a champion. And those who lose their sponsors are the first to pay the price when the emerging business’s development stalls.

In this session Gina O'Connor presented results from her research on breakthrough innovation in large mature firms that provides insight in what can be done to address this problem.
